Caymus Special Select 2004

RedHeads Studio Barrel Monkeys Shiraz 2004

Englishman Tony Laithwaite  bought an old bar called Red Heads in McLaren Vale, Australia and renamed it Red Heads Studio. He outfitted it with winemaking equipment and invited young, fresh out of college winemakers to try their hand at making small batches of wine with grapes that are usually very ripe from various sources in the region. The attraction is that these new winemakers usual starting jobs are working in wineries as "Barrel Monkeys" whose job is to move hoses and barrels around in a winery. The Studio gives them the opportunity to make wine which is what they really went to school for! This is one of those wines, which also has a completely irreverent label sort of explaining the whole Barrel Monkey job. We can only say that these Barrel Monkeys produced a wine that fans of in your face fruit bombs will enjoy!

This dark, almost opaque wine has a highly aromatic nose of sweet blackberry and plum. The concentrated, impressive flavors include blackberry, blueberry, mocha and espresso with a lingering spicy (and slightly hot) finish. The heat comes, no doubt, from the heady 15.5% alcohol level.  $21.99

Twomey Merlot 2003

The 2003 Twomey Merlot is a robust, yet elegant wine that balances intense fruit with suppleness. Properly cellared this full-bodied Merlot should provide drinking pleasure until 2017. $59.99

Domaine Cherrier Pere et Files Sancere 2005

A lovely golden color. Very aromatic with lovely citrus notes to entice the nose. The attack in the mouth is full, rich and round. More Citrus. 2005 is a great vintage with excellent quality.  It had the advantage of "beaucoup de soleil" in September, which produced a richer, more luscious wine. Chill and partner with fish, seafood and poultry or as a refreshing aperitif all on its own. $23.99

Ridge 2003 Monte Bello (Santa Cruz Mountains)

Torbreck Cuvee Juveniles 2003

Cuvee Juveniles is a bold and seductive unoaked blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, and 20% Shiraz that represents a youthful wine made from old vines. Fruit from dry grown, low yielding vines is fermented, bottled and released early. It is fragrant, intense and concentrated in flavor with blackberry, earth and Asian spices. Sensuous palate feel and tremendous length make this wine frighteningly drinkable now, yet with a constitution to mature in the cellar for many years.  With a wonderful nose of smoked meats, white pepper, and wet stone one would expect this to be a dense, oak laced wine but that is not the case. The wine never sees one stave of oak, allowing fresh, lively blueberry fruit to drive this wine. Try with a pork roast, or braised lamb shanks.  $21.99

Torbreck Vintners Woodcutter's Shiraz 2004

" The 2004 Woodcutters Shiraz is a 20,000-case cuvee aged completely in old wood. Pure blackberry liqueur intermixed with hints of charcoal, tar, and pepper jump from the glass of this soft, velvety-textured, opulent, fruit-filled Shiraz. Amazingly complex for its price, this lusty, appealing, hedonist’s dream is worth buying by the case. Drink it over the next 4-5 years. David Powell, unquestionably one of the world’s finest wine producers, has an uncanny ability to discover old vine Barossa vineyards, and then secure long term contracts for their fruit. It is amazing that such high quality sources have not already been plucked by Australia’s giant wine corporations. Torbreck’s wines continue to get better and better, combining the old vine ripe fruit of Barossa with a European sensitivity to elegance and balance. The finest wines in this portfolio are pricy, but David Powell delivers some remarkable reds and whites at prices that are more than fair for the quality in the bottle." Score: 91. —Robert Parker, October 2005. $20.99

Vina Von Siebenthal Carabantes 2003

In 1554 a Spanish priest named Francisco de Carabantes brought to Chile its very first vine. By naming its first wine Carabantes, Viña von Siebenthal wishes to honor the pioneer of Chilean viticulture. Carabantes is an innovative, fresh wine in which the Syrah expresses itself in new, delicate and perfumed tones.  Syrah 85%, Cabernet Sauvignon 10%, Petit Verdot 5%.

Color: Ruby red with some suggestions of purple.
Aroma and bouquet:  Intense with good complexity. At the forefront are red berries, blueberries, raspberry, flower aromas such as violet, with hints of aromatic herbs reminiscent of musk rose, dried tea leaves, laurel, liquorice, spices such as white pepper and a mint finish.
Flavor: A sweet, ample, fresh start with good volume and mature tannins, a very pleasing ending. $25.99

Vina Von Siebenthal Montelig 2003

Montelìg is the fusion of "monte" which is Spanish for mountain and "lìg" which is the native pre-Inca indian language for light. The mountains and the light are the most striking and moving elements of the Chilean landscape. The velvety, refined texture of the light against the aristochratic mountains of Panquehue are evoqued beautifully by Viña von Siebenthal's premium wine Montelìg.  Cabernet Sauvignon 80%, Petit Verdot 15%, Carmenère 5%

Aroma and bouquet:  Intense, persistent and with good complexity. At the forefront, before swirling, are berries, in particular raspberry and cassis. Once swirled, there are subtle hints of mint and boldo intertwined with pleasant hints of green olive, pinenut, black pepper, dark chocolate and truffle. These aromas come together harmoniously and beautifully lending the wine great complexity and elegance. Flavor: Velvety start which denotes great concentration of aromas and a very flavorsome and complex character. The flavor is consistent, with good body, harmonious and with a large, fresh and elegant ending.    $39.99

Neckenmarkt Zweigelt Classic 2004

Zweigelt is technically a cross of the St. Laurent and Blaurankisch grapes, but as the most widely planted of the three is considered the third red Austrian varietal. Ruby to garnet red in color with even darker hints at the core. Solid red fruit complemented by so much spice people often mistake this for, "a really interesting Zinfandel or Shiraz." It contains a much firmer backbone and more tannin than most zin or shiraz and therefore makes a better food pair. Open it and let breathe for 20-30 minutes to allow the full spice character to open up.  $14.99

Larkmead Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2002

93 POINTS - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
“Performing even better from bottle than it did from cask. It is a sexy, supple Cabernet offering a dense saturated purple color, and a big, full bodied, heady bouquet of black fruits, melted licorice, and smoke. This fleshy, hedonistic Cabernet Sauvignon will have huge crowd appeal, and should fare well in blind tastings. Enjoy it over the next 10-15 years.”  $49.99

El Sequé Vinedos de El Sequé 2004

The wines are made in the Alicante D.O., far from Rioja on the southeastern shoreline of Spain. Monastrell grows there at an average altitude of 600 meters. El Sequé covers a relatively small 40 hectares. The soil, noted for its low virility, is pebbly with a low degree of humus and high degree of limestone. The vineyards enjoy a Mediterranean climate -- low rainfalls, lots of sun.

The Monastrell (Mouvèdre) grape gives this wine a dark color and a full bodied quality with notes of leather, blackberry and tar with a pleasant finish.  $12.99

Ridge Zinfandel Paso Robles 2004 - $29.99

Ridge Lytton Springs 2004 - $32.99

Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 - $110.00

Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon is produced exclusively from grapes grown in the Oakville Viticultural Area of Napa Valley. Ninety percent of the grapes are from the Martin Stelling Vineyard, the estate vineyard located behind the winery at the base of the western hills of Oakville. The remaining ten percent of the fruit comes from our Sullenger Vineyard and one other small estate in Oakville.

Intermittent hot and cold spells were the theme of the 2003 growing season.  Cooler temperatures in August and September contributed to a slightly later start to harvest than usual, but a nice heat spike in mid-September really kicked the vines into gear.  Most of the grapes were picked in the later part of October, which required a lot of patience.  Fortunately, they  were rewarded with a beautiful Indian summer the last two weeks of October.

The 2003 blend is 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc.

Winemaker Stephanie Putnam has continued to refine the Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon flavor profile while retaining the long-admired house style. The 2003 vintage was harvested between October 11th and 29th and was aged primarily in new French oak for 18 months. The result is a plush and silky Cabernet, with a velvety mouthfeel and a palate bursting with blackberry and black cherry fruit, around a dense core of chewy tannins.

Mulderbosch Faithful Hound 2002 - $22.99

Klein Constantia Vin de Constance 1999 - $49.99

Rudi Schultz Syrah 2003 - $35.99

Belle Glos Pinot Noir 2005 - Clark & Telephone Vineyard

This 30 year old vineyard is perched on a mesa above the Santa Maria Valley, where the vines absorb all the sunlight the coastal climate will give.  In farming this vineyard planted "own root" to the pioneer California Pinot Noir clone known as Martini, Belle Glos has learned to maximize the grapes' flavors through intense pruning and crop thinning techniques.  The wine from the 2005 vintage is supple with deep natural berry-fruit and spice box qualities. (California) $39.99

Belle Glos

Winemaker Chuck Wagner and his family grew Pinot Noir on their Napa Valley property beginning in the mid-1960s, and produced this varietal commercially under the Caymus label until 1990. Chuck then came to realize that the California Pinots he liked best had two things in common. They were all built on grapes rather than on winemaking techniques, and they were all from cool, coastal areas like the Santa Maria Valley and the Sonoma Coast. The first Belle Glos bottling came from a 75-acre vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley planted to Pinot Noir in 1972 and taken over by the Wagner family in 2000. Changes that he introduced in the viticultural practices at this vineyard radically reduced the yields and resulted in the wine he wanted to produce, with deep color, full fruit flavors and excellent balance. Following that first bottling, 2001 Belle Glos Pinot Noir, Santa Maria Valley, Chuck’s son Joseph Wagner assumed control of both key aspects of Belle Glos: viticulture and winemaking. He was responsible for blending the 2002 Belle Glos bottlings  and took over winemaking entirely with the 2003 vintage.

$16.99

Renato Ratti Barolo DOCG Rocche Marcenasco 2001

The vineyard of Rocche dell’Annunziata is historically considered the most important of the “Marcenasco” sub zone. Barolo Marcenasco Rocche is characterized by supreme elegance and a fine bouquet of rose and licorice.  Color: garnet red. A delicate and persistent bouquet with traces of licorice and tobacco. Full flavored, warm and moderately tannic. An elegant and well balanced wine.  $69.99

Renato Ratti Barolo DOCG Marcenasco 2001

Barolo Marcenasco has ancient origins. There are historical documents from the “Rigestum Comunis Albe” that bear witness to the cultivation of the Nebbiolo vine in the “Marcenascum” area already back in the 12th Century. Barolo Marcenasco is smooth, balanced, elegant and faithfully reflects the typical characteristics of the La Morra sub zone. Color: intense garnet red. A bouquet with traces of licorice and tobacco. Full flavored, full-bodied and elegant. $49.99
